Abstract
The present study investigated university-type (public and private) differences in postgraduate students’ mentoring in Oyo State, Nigeria. A close examination of situations in Nigerian universities reveals that the majority of postgraduate students do not complete their programmes by the deadline, despite having completed the coursework requirements. Some even abandon their thesis and go on leave for reasons only they know. This study did a comparative analysis of postgraduate students’ mentoring in universities in Oyo State. The research focused on mentoring as any support for individual graduate students to develop and maintain research profiles, professional activities, knowledge and skills sharing. The study was limited to selected Oyo State Public and private Universities running approved postgraduate studies. The descriptive survey research design was used, and the population included all postgraduate students from Oyo State's public and private universities. The study's data was gathered using a self-created instrument known as the 'Postgraduate Thesis Mentoring Questionnaire' (PMQ). According to the findings, there is a high level of mentoring of postgraduate students in Oyo State. The study equally found a significant university-type difference in mentoring of postgraduate students (private university mentoring with mean = 2. 83, SD = 0. 938, P<0.05 and public university mean = 3.15, SD = 1.203, P<0.05). It was concluded that there was a significant difference in mentoring among postgraduate students in universities in Oyo State. This study suggested, among other things, that the government and university administrators work to reduce the workload of postgraduate students' supervisors so they can devote more time to mentoring.
